So, shall we call this a mini reintroduction? Since my first intro, over 15,000 more of you have joined this community (welcome!). I’ve also taken the leap into full-time self-employment, which means there’s lots more planned for you. There’s so much that happens behind the scenes so I wanted to give you a deeper insight into both myself & the platform. Everything I do is rooted in community and making sure this space to feels valuable for every one of you. So I hope you love it here & I always want to hear what you’d like to see more of. Signed, FM 🤍
Hi. My name is Phyllis Martins, otherwise spotted as Finance Matters UK. It is FM either way, and that was intentional. I'm an ex banking and finance professional, chartered accountant, and founder. I've just spent shy of ten years in banking and finance, but I've only gone and done the millennial thing and left corporate. What would I say was the toughest part of my career? Well, apart from studying CEMA, probably navigating the space as a male dominated industry. And aside from that, balancing the sheer scale of my ambition with wanting to be more than my job situation. Balancing the sheer scale of my ambition with wanting to be more than my job. That's great. When I'm asked what finance matters is about, it's really hard to not give a tagline. You often hear me talk about guiding individuals through their current and future finance matters. An authentic platform that takes the difficulty out of managing money and brings financial well-being and confidence to the forefront. But deep down it is so much more than that. My personal passion for finance truly emerged during a transitionary period of my childhood. I found myself almost forced to understand the money thing, I guess as a means to alleviate the pressure from my mum as a single parent, and years later that passion has built purpose. And here I am now, advocating for the same financial well-being that I've been able to enjoy enjoy for fathers. I always say that Finance Matters UK was birthed on a random Thursday evening and it kind of was. I'd always been a go to for friends and family and someone will remember I used to post little snippets of my personal Instagram. But that really exposed just how little people knew. So I created FM UK as a means to expose more people to more knowledge. I definitely have always had a way with words. I was a serious stage kid growing up, loved parts, serious bookworm. So I don't know, maybe in some way all of that has merged together and allowed me to really channel my creativity but in the best way I know how today. I never set out for FM to grow to this extent but we have just kept growing. I say we, but for the last four and a half years, it has been a one man band. What started as one Instagram post has grown to an online community of over 60,000 individuals across our social channels, an amazing portfolio with amazing brands, and our first ever in person event which has over 150 people, and just so much more that FM has built on. So it's actually really nice to see the growth since its origination. And in early twenty twenty four, I'd done the big reveal. I had been a faceless platform until then. I remember I'd be in conversations or people even sending me my own posts, not knowing it was me, and that was quite fun. But I knew that I had to go deeper to really build a personal relationship with the audience that placed such a great deal of trust in me, and we did exactly that. I continue to nurture that personal relationship through the engagement in our content, but also the one to ones, the workshops and master classes, and those are just some of the branches that allow that direct interaction that's really built on trust. To be honest there's a few things I'm really proud of. I really enjoy the workshops at the other schools, different communities, agencies because I get to see the real value in real time and it is super rewarding to connect with so many different individuals, different backgrounds, age groups where they all have the same goal but their needs need to be met in different ways. And over time I began to realize that this is really important to me and that's been quite evident with the amount of time I've poured into what FM produces alongside a really intense job. I remember telling my mum that despite all that I'd achieved in my life, my career, that was a notable moment that felt like yes this has real purpose and in many ways that was a turning point. I think there's a really cool crossover between everything that I bring to FM UK. So having the foundational experience from my banking and finance career, the credentials and the knowledge from being a chartered accountant, and the first hand experience of all the facets that I really dive into. The savings, effective debt management, purchasing my first home, investing, and the sheer normalcy of how I discuss really difficult topics. And I think if you look in the center of all of those corners, there is me in the middle. You need to start saving. One thing about me, I am not against picking up a book. Coming from a girl who hated most in school to where I am now, I hate to say it but our parents were right education is key. When you know more you can simply do more and that's exactly what I found through FM UK. What is next for FM? A lot more of everything, more events, workshops, elevator content, pouring into the FM community, just a lot more.
